You would think a simple question like how often should Persian rugs be cleaned would have a simple answer.
However, a quick Google search will show you, on the first page of results, a variety of answers. Some say once a year, some from 1 to 3 years and others from 3 to 5 years. But which is correct? Just how often should Persian rugs be cleaned?
Let’s take a look at the top results and try and work out which answer is the best.
Clean Once A Year Or Less?
The top search result, on the search engine Bing, says that your Persian rug should be ‘deep cleaned annually or even more frequently’. Other similar results say ‘every 18 months’.
There’s quite a difference in a year or less compared to the 3 to 5 years that other results give. The answer to this just takes a little investigation.
All those short-term, 18 months or less, answers for getting your Persian rug cleaned are all from rug cleaning companies!
Of course they would want you to get your rug professionally cleaned as often as possible. They wouldn’t have a business otherwise. Because of this their advice has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Clean Every 1 To 3 Years?
The 1 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years answers seem to be a bit more grounded in reality. The answers are simply best advice and seem to have been given by those who do not have a vested self interest in them. And the key factor is having such a larger date range? They recognize that how often you clean your rug ‘depends on where it is placed and how much foot traffic there is’.
One example states that the ‘hallway, lounge and dining room’ should be ‘cleaned by a professional once a year’ and that ‘bedrooms and guestrooms every 1 to 3 years’.
It makes sense that the placement of your rug and the amount of usage it gets is going to directly correlate with how often it will need professional cleaning.
Clean Every 3 To 5 Years?
Cleaning your Persian rug ‘every 3 to 5 years’ seems to be a fairly common answer amongst people who have no connection to rug cleaning services.
However, this can be viewed in two ways. Either we are getting the most honest answer, or we are getting the most uneducated one.
Despite rug cleaners having a vested interest in how often a rug should be cleaned they are also in the best position to answer that question. They have experience, knowledge and insight. Whenever we want to learn something, we seek out the professionals. Is rug cleaning any different?
How Often Should You Clean Your Persian Rug? The Answer.
As we can see there isn’t really one answer. It’s different for everyone. “There’s no one size fits all answer when it comes to cleaning your Persian rug,” said Niels Larssen of persianrugs. “You have to consider where the rug is situated within a building. “Does it have to support heavy footfall? Is it beside an exit door or in a more remote part of the building? There is a lot to take into account so the answer will be different for everyone”.
If you had to pick a specific year it seems that 3 would be a safe bet. It fits nicely and is a nice middle ground from all the answers and advice available. Find out more about Persian rug cleaning on our website
