There are three things that are necessary for human survival and, in an emergency, should not be overlooked. In case of an emergency, try to make sure you have access to water, food, and shelter. If you do not have one of these items, it can drastically decrease your chance of survival.
One of the most important things to have during an emergency is drinking water. During an emergency situation, it is possible that tap water is no longer usable. In this situation, you should look for emergency equipment for east coast, west coast, or land locked areas. Emergency equipment can give you access to drinking water, toilets, and even showers.
The second thing you should have to survive an emergency is food. While humans can only survive a couple days without water, they can survive less than a month without food. This means, if your emergency situation lasts more than a week, you should try to find a source of food. So, if there is a possibility you will be in an emergency situation for more than a couple of days, it is important to try to make sure you have food available if you should need it.
The final thing needed to survive is a shelter. While this is not necessary for short term emergencies, shelter tends to bring people comfort. Shelters can come in many forms and sizes, but an important function is that your shelter should protect you from weather and nature. While shelter may seem less demanding, it can protect you from exposure. Exposure to extreme cold or heat kills thousands of people every year, making shelter just as important as drinking water and food.
If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation, try to focus and remember your needs. Once you have access to those, you should be prepared for anything.
